When to take your thyroid hormone medication

Is there a best time to take your thyroid hormone medication?

If you are taking levothyroxine, the recommendation is to take it on an empty stomach with some water.  The idea is to ensure that the maximum amount of hormones are absorbed.  So the best time for most people is to drink it first thing in the morning, about an hour before having breakfast, or three or more hours after dinner.  The key here is that it must be on an empty stomach.

If you are taking T3, your doctor may recommend that you take it in doses every 8 hours, which ends up being about three times a day.  Your dosage may also be only once a day, so make sure you check with your doctor on the best practice to ensure the best absorption!

Last, do not underestimate the negative impact of coffee and supplements on how your body absorbs the thyroid hormones.  If you decide to have your morning coffee with your thyroid hormone medication, it can reduce the number of thyroid hormones that your body absorbs.  Also, don’t take antacids or supplements that contain calcium or iron within four hours of taking levothyroxine.
